Computer Virus and spyware terms (2/2)
This guide is part the second section in our virus and spyware glossary. It is designed to help you understand what our computer repair technicians are talking about when they report to you that you have a particular type of virus or spyware. We do not give specific advice on how to remove computer viruses here.
Polymorphic virus
As the name suggests a polymorphic virus is a virus that constantly changes form. These changes can include random changes in the virus’s code as well changes to virus’s file name. These viruses are particularly hard for virus scanners to detect and remove. Expert computer repair services are often needed to remove polymorphic viruses.
Phishing
An attempt to solicit your private information by means of deception. For example an email requesting your bank details.
Port
A port is a virtual door to your computer. Some ports must be left open in order for you to access various services such as the Internet. However unnecessarily leaving ports open on your computer is like leaving the doors open to your house. That is, leaving ports open encourages intruders. See also firewall. Quarantine
Quarantine is the place where viruses’ scanners put computer viruses. Computer viruses are removed to the quarantine section to keep your computer safe from malicious code.Rootkits: Virus computer code that is designed to hide operations to the computer’s registry. Root kits often act in stealth thus making removal more difficult than typical viruses. Expert computer help is often needed for root kits.
Spam
Spam is computer industry jargon for unsolicited email. Often spam emails are associated with scams or the spread of viruses but spam does not just apply to this type of email.

Spyware
Software designed to report back user activity to a third party server. For example a spyware program may report back your Internet banking details to hackers. The process to remove spyware depends on the maker of the program.
Trojan Horse Virus
A computer program with a virus hidden in the source code that will open a port on your computer. Once opened the port is used to allow a hacker and/or their software to remotely control your computer. Removal of Trojan horse viruses is normally straight forward but not always.
Virus
Computer code designed to damage a computer and/or subvert use of a computer.
Wild list
